Dive Bombing w/ Eddie Van Halen – The Speaker Bomb Effects Rig

If you were lucky enough to see the original Van Halen lineup of brothers Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, Michael Anthony and David Lee Roth, you will might will probably remember the dive boming EVH speaker and effect rig, complete wity the “speaker bomb”  looming stage left. I say “might”, will get to that in a second. This was the engine for Eddie’s early tone and effects. Here’s a shot of a faithful replica from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, “The Met”, from the EVH “PLay It Loud” Expo.

Visually this says everything about the creator Eddie Van Halen, an amazing edgy esthetic with the WWII era bomb casting that held some of Eddie’s effects. All built by the guitar virtuoso and “gadeteer genius” of EVH on basically no $budget, just like the original Frankenstrat guitar also pictured. This rig went out with the band on their first world tour in support of amazing acts like Montrose, Ted Nugent and Black Sabbath. We were lucky to see Van Halen open for Sabbath in Sept 1978 at the Baltimore Civic Center. The stage lighting had heavy spots and the full light rig was not in use for VAn Halen as an opening act, so did not ever really notice the black speaker bomb against the live dark stage backdrop. It was only later we saw it a Creem Magazine photo. All that went to show immediately got into a heated argument about if it was really there at our show and we somehow missed noticing it…ahh the good ole’ day.

There was not book that could teach Eddie how to achieve the sounds he had in his head…so he wrote his one.

Designing QUEEN (Freddie, Brian, Roger and John) Rock Iconz….”So Many Choices”

One of things we get asked the most when talking about the KnuckleBonz Rock Iconz® Limited Edition Statue Series is, “how do you decide on the era.” When working with the likes of QUEEN Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon there are so many eras and looks for the band. How do you decide on what to create. While there’s many things that go into a big decision like that, the biggest thing is to look at it from the “Superfan” perspective. After all, we are all fans 1st here at KnuckleBonz, just like you. We simply think, “what would we want on our shelf, in the mancave, on the desk etc. ? In the case of our new QUEEN Rock Iconz State designs, we knew that for the 1st time we would be creating the entire band, so we wanted a great stage costume for each member. We created Freddie Mercury and Brian May over a decade ago from the post “Shear Heat Attack” era so Freddie was in his “Harlequin” Body suit and Brian was wearing one of his signature flowing top w/ clogs. That removed that era as we had already gone there. We looked at the tours after this when Freddie’s hair starts to become shorter, all the way thru QUEEN “Live at Wembley” and QUEEN “Live Aid” Concert. All are supercool and iconic, but we found that the best live costumes across the entire band was the QUEEN “Live in Montreal” Show. Every band member had a great stage look. Even the more subtle John Deacon was flashing “great garb in blue.” We also look carefully for something that has not been done before and that was the case here…so there you go, QUEEN Rock Iconz(Set 1).

That said, over the next 2 to 3 years, you can expect a lot of surprises for QUEEN fans across all our lines, Rock Iconz, 3D Vinyl® and ON Tour®. Let us know what you would like to see from KnuckleBonz…”We are listening to you always…”  https://knucklebonz.com/vote-new-rock-iconz/

Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” – Simple Designs Can Be the Most Complex

Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” – Simple Designs Can Be the Most Complex

When we began the initial discussions for our 3D Vinyl® Limited Edition State Series in 2017, the initial focus what to create something in statue and collectible form for Superfans™ that for what ever reason, did not dig the statue category. There was a ton of creative motivation obviously, but that was the touchstone moment.

Once we decided to move forward with a new KnuckleBonz collectible series, the real fun began; what albums should we initially create in 3D? We all blurted out our obvious favorites. Some were perfect for the 3D Vinyl format and could be expressed easily in statue form. Others, although amazing albums, with equally great cover art would prove elusive. One album that we all defaulted to and wanted to consider, was Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.” The gold standard for concept albums, and the 8th studio release for Pink Floyd. The power of artist Storm Thorgerson’s pyramid with the prism light beam? Sounds great right? We are now 4 years into the 3D Vinyl Collector Series and we still have not pulled the trigger on any Dark Side of the Moon designs for 3D Vinyl. However, we are sneaking up on it and might submit something to Pink Floyd for consideration soon…Staytuned.

Les Claypool of Primus Goes Diggin’ for Gold with Robert Trujillo of Metallica

Les Claypool of Primus has written and directed a new short film pulling in the slap bass and acting chops of none other than Ro

bert Trujillo of Metallica.

Claypool uses his music video and filmography skills  to shoot this wacky ode’ to the old west that would make even “The Good the Bad and the Ugly” crack a forced smile.  I can see Lee Van Cleef now. Claypool digs for, and finds gold, only to have his claim-jumped by Trujillo. A Primus-style slap-bass showdown ensues with the pair showing off their new EMG pick-ups. Spoiler alert, this is actually a promo video for the EMG Pickups endorsed by the Primus and Metallica vets.

Check it our here on Youtube: https://youtu.be/lP8RzPu54rY

Primus has rescheduled the “Tribute to Kings” RUSH tribute tour fort a 3rd time this summer. Hope it’s a charm…

The Power of Album Art – KnuckleBonz 3D Vinyl

KISS 3D Vinyl Collectible Statues

The Power of Album Art – 3D Vinyl Collector Series from KnuckleBonz®

The digital music firehose began to run at full force either side of the new millennium. With it came more choices and access to music of all kinds than ever. It was also the footsteps of doom, and the beginning of the end for perhaps the most precious aspect of new music buying. The experience of going to retail and flipping through new music releases on Vinyl and other formats. Can’t tell you the number of times super classic bands where discovered by first connecting with album art. KISS for sure was a buy-at-fist-sight based on the original black debut cover with the make-up on Gene Simmons “The Demon”, Paul Stanley “The Starchild”, Ace Frehley “The Spaceman”, and Peter Criss “The Cat.” Destroyer also was a call to arms for early soldiers of The KISS Army. It was perhaps the most valuable form of marketing and creating awareness for bands.

While the Vinyl format has seen a resurgence and has been the only growing aspect of the music business in recent years, it’s hard to imagine the reverence for music that we once had returning.

What we do here is Rock Hard! everyday to try to make sure music Superfans never have to be without that special feeling when seeing great performers or album art represented in fine arts collectibles. That’s the sole focus of the KnuckleBonz 3D Vinyl®, Rock Iconz and On Tour™ Collector Series.

Motorhead Warpig – Rock Iconz Statue – Some Design Issues for 3D

When we designed the original Motorhead Warpig Rock Iconz(R) statue back in 2017 we ha d a few problems to solve to have it work as a desktop or shelf mount statue. As Motorhead Superfans will know, the original logo of the menacing Snaggletooth is white on black and has the Warpig floating above the Motorhead typeface with the chain and ornaments hung underneath. No problem in 2D, but to get this same set up in 3D we had to figure our what to do with this negative space. We experimented with the head mounted on a pole that looked OK, but somehow less powerful. That’s when the idea of the war-torn debris pile came up. We all dug that and it took on a life on it’s own. It was the clear design winner and it went into production in mid-2017. We continue to keep this limited edtion open for now, but it will be closing soon.
