Celebrating the “Crazy Diamond” Rock Iconz Syd Barrett on his Birthday

Syd Barrett a founding member of Pink Floyd was born on this day, 1946. Throughout his life, Barrett created music that blended psychedelia, folk-rock and experimental pop. We were yet to have the “progressive rock” moniker the would become synonymous with Pink Floyd. Syd was one of the first to suggest a music performance might be more of a “look at” event multi-media experience vs. a dance event. His solo career included two albums that included Madcap Laughs.

After Syd’s exit from The Floyd due to metal illness he became the muse for much of the Floyd themes and song writing. Roger Waters is open about Syd’s influence on his writing from Wish You Were and through Pink Floyd The Wall.

KnuckleBonz created a Rock Iconz Ltd. Edition Statue to celebrate Syd from his solo years in 2017. That has been SOLD OUT for many months, but you can still check out out here.

We have created a new Syd Barret Rock Iconz Statue design and hop to release it later in 2023. Hard to believe the 50th anniversary for Dark Side of the Moon is almost upon us…what happened?

Pink Floyd – A Saucer Full of Secrets – A Brief Conjunction…

On this day in 1968. Pink Floyd released their 2nd studio album A Saucer Full of Secrets . It is notable today as the only time the (5) members of Pink Floyd would appear on any single track together. That track was the amazing Set Controls for the Heart of the Sun, which we believe is the first glimpse of what Pink Floyd would ultimately become. It featured original members Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright along with newly recruited Cambridge- pal David Gilmour. Gilmour, a childhood friend of Barrett’s, had been brought on to cover singing and guitar duties to pick up the slack that was becoming more frequent because of Syd’s advancing mental health issues.

Drop the needle of this early jewel from the Pink Floyd crown, or even better, get out the see Nick Mason’s Saucer Full of Secrets World Tour when it passes by you. We promise you, this is not some tired nostalgia tour. It is amazing and gives a “fleeting glimpse” of what it might have felt like seeing Pink Floyd in the late 60s or early 70s ahead of the Dark Side of the Moon.

Pink Floyd Records New Song to Support Those Affected By The Invasion of Ukraine

Pink Floyd members David Gilmour and Nick Mason have reunited to record the first new Floyd music since the Division Bell album 1994 in support of those affected by the Russian Invasion of the Ukraine.

This new track samples the amazing vocal performance of BoomBox Frontman Andriy Khlyvnyuk singing in front of Kyiv’s Sofiyskaya Square. BoomBox is the Ukrianian rock band that performed with  Glimour in 2015 in support of the Free Belarus Theater.

David Gilmour spoke about the new recording and the situation in Ukraine, “I hope it will receive wide support and publicity. We want to raise funds for humanitarian charities and raise morale. We want to express our support for Ukraine and, in that way, show that most of the world thinks that it is totally wrong for a superpower to invade the independent democratic country that Ukraine has become“.

You can listen to the new track and see the video by acclaimed film  director Mat Whitecross. All of this happened very quickly and the video was shot at the same time the track was recorded not more than a week ago. Pink Floyd Hey Hey Rise Up

Pink Floyd Division Bell – New Music for the Last Time – March 28th, 1994

On this day on 1994, Pink Floyd released Division Bell. This was the 14th Studio Album for the band and the 1st to be recorded without a shroud of legal issues stemming from the exit of Roger Waters.  The album was co-produced by David Gilmour and Bob Ezrin. There we reportedly (65) pieces of music the band had improvised that were whittled down to become the 58:47 minute LP running time. Rick Wright would receive song credits for the first time since Wish You Were Here in 1975.

The world tour for Division Bell was the most elaborate in the storied history of Pink Floyd. It would see “Mr. Screen” tower behind and over the band during the show like an alien space craft. An articulated Mirror Ball hovered over stadiums around the world and would morph into a flower as the band closed the show with Shine On You Crazy Diamond. An amazing site we were fortunate to see at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC. You can experience this tour in the amazing “Pulse” video. That’s worth a re-visit for any true Floydian.

Maybe we should have, but little did we know, this would be the last world tour for Pink Floyd…the Ringing of the Division Bell had begun.

KnuckleBonz is celebrating the Division Bell with our Limited Edition Statue for our On Tour Series. This hand-cast and detailed statue is officially licensed with Pink Floyd and ships with a hand-numbered Certificate of Authenticity on the statue base. Order Your Here…

Pink Floyd – Live Performance as an Art Form

As Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon creeps up on the 50th Anniversary next year, it’s important to remember the impact the album had musically. However, for us here, it’s even more vital to remember the impact Pink Floyd would have on live concert performance that can be traced back to this era. Evolving from the liquid light shows in the Syd Barret era, The Floyd introduce Mr. Screen in France 1973 along with  the short films of Ian Emes. These short films loosely tell the story of the individual tracks of the 42:49 minute Dark Side of the Moon. A touchstone moment. Pink Floyd also performed Dark Side live with the Roland Petit Ballet, an unbelievable mash-up for 1973. The success of Dark Side of the Moon allowed the band to expand on these live performance ideas that would grow into the gold standard for what a stadium rock concert experience would become. Pink Floyd was the 1st  to take their own custom sound and light equipment  out on the road. The original lighting stage dress featured cherry pickers with stage lights that moved during the show…an cool concept that was born out of necessity because of the issues surrounding a traditional light truss. There is little pro-shot film for video from this era…the stills we have must tell the story. What an amazing time for music…

We hope to create some of the moments for the KnuckleBonz Collectors and Pink Floyd fans around the world later this year.

PINK FLOYD – 46 Years Later, Still, “Wish You Were Here”

On this day in 1975 Pink Floyd released their follow up album to Dark Side of the Moon, “Wish You Were Here.” This was the 2nd full-on concept album from the band and was written exclusively by Roger Waters. After the life changing success of Dark Side, Waters laments about the loss of the talent and friendship of Syd Barrett  and the bands growing distaste for the music business. It’s no surprise that music critics would knee-jerk and write that the new material was largely uninspired.  However, fans disagreed and the album went to #1 in birth the USA and the UK. Both David Gilmour and keyboardist Richard Wright have said Wish You Were Here was their favorite Pink Floyd album.

Wish You Were Here was one of the 1st creation in our 3D Vinyl Limited Edition Statue Series that celebrates the great album art of the last 50 years. Check out Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here 3D Vinyl here.

Nick Mason Opens Pink Floyd: Their Mortal Remains Exhibition in LA

Nick Mason Opens Pink Floyd: Their Mortal Remains Exhibition in LA.

Hollywood Boulevard was alight Sept 2nd as Pink Floyd founding member, drummer Nick Mason, cut the ribbon to open the the “Their Mortal Remains” Exhibition. Even Floyd Superfans might forget that Nick Mason is actually the only member of Pink Floyd to appear on every recording and play every Pink Floyd show since the bands 1st days with Syd Barrett.

Over (350 Pink) Floyd artifacts are on display the at the Vogue Multicultural Museum in Los Angeles thru Jan 9th 2022. We were lucky enough to be invited to the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony. Here’s some pictures of some of the items that have inspired KnuckleBonz® work with Pink Floyd…The Pink Floyd Pig “Algie” floats above the exhibition opening crowd. The original pick was flown above the Battersea Power Station in the UK. The Pig broke lose of the tether and floats over the UK disrupting air traffic and landing in a farmers field in Kent. Our Rock Iconz® On Tour™ Pink Floyd Pig Collectible is on back order here…reserve your now. Only 1977 are being cast for Pink Floyd Superfans worldwide.

Pink Floyd Division Bell Stage Mock Up was on display. This is cool as you can see “Mr. Screen” in the center of the concert rigging. Note the light banks that line the stage. This was the inspiration for the statue base design of our On Tour Limited Edition Collectible for the Division Bell Pink Floyd Screen Collectible. Production has wrapped on this design and is on the way to our US warehouse. Reserve yours here with a pre-order. Limited to 1994 worldwide.

Pink Floyd “Time” short film animation cell created by Ian Emes was on full display. Notice the square aspect ratio of this production animation cell. It’s squared versus the typical landscape format. This was because this animation was bound for the 1st use of the Pink Floyd circular projection screen on the 1972 Pink Floyd “Dark Side of the Moon” world tour. Life would never be the same for David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Richard Wright after this…

Pink Floyd – The Story of Wish You Were Here

This will not be a news flash for Pink Floydians, but I have been surprised recently in conversations of the number of people who are not aware of a really great documentary of the making of Pink Floyd “Wish You Were Here.” If there has ever been pressure on a band to follow up after breakthrough commercial success in music, this is it. If you recall, Wish You Were Here was the follow up album to Dark Side of the Moon, need we say more.

The (59) minute film was released in 2012 and has interviews with all four Pink Floyd members, Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Richard Wright and Nick Mason. There is a a focus on specifics for all the tracks like Have a Cigar and Welcome to the Machine, but there is also a large section on how the record was inspired by co-founder Syd Barrett. The band gives candid insight on the relationship each member had with him. We were struck by the sincere sadness you could see from Roger Waters and David Gilmour about the loss of this great talent and great friend.

Also,  there are awesome interviews with the visual side of Pink Floyd in cartoonist Gerald Scarfe and designer Storm Thorgerson. They are both heroes to us here at KnuckleBonz.

The Story of Wish You Were Here It is easily streamed on a number of video services. We caught it this weekend on the music streaming service Qello.

We have lots in the works with Pink Floyd now in all 3 of our collector series, Rock Iconz®, 3D Vinyl® and On Tour ™. Check that out here.
