The Making of KISS Alive ! – 47 Years Ago

47 years ago on May 16th – KISS headlined Detroit’s Cobo Hall for the 1st time. A sellout crowd of 12,000 future KISStorians were treated to one of 72 dates on the Dressed To Kill tour. It was also the first of (5) shows that KISS recorded for what would become one of the greatest live albums ever, KISS ALIVE!

Rock photographer Fin Costello’s famous photo shoot also happened during this period that would be the source of the front cover and back covers of KISS Alive! Fin was a major contributor to Circus Magazine and other rock monthly mags if you recall.

Paul Stanley comments on the Cobo show and Detroit:

“This concert and the release of “Alive!” marked a pivotal giant step towards achieving domination in the 70’s. “Detroit Rock City” was written as a salute to the people who championed us as a headliner when others still saw us as an opening act. We can never forget them. We decided, that was the only place we would start the Reunion Tour.”

KnuckleBonz Created a statue set to capture this era of the band that has been SOLD OUT for some time. You can check out what you missed here.

If you are in the KISS Army, out latest statue set for Gene Simmon The Demon, Paul Stanley The Starchild, Ace Frehley The Spaceman and Peter Criss The Catman is from the Dynasty era and has just landed in our US warehouse to begin shipping. Order Here…No FoMO.

42 Years of KISS Dynasty

Yesterday marked 42 years since the release of the KISS Dynasty record. While it not apparent to the KISS Army at the time, the original KISS lineup was only a short time away from it’s end. Peter Criss did not actually play on the album due to a combination of injuries to his hands from car accident and struggles with substance abuse. Anton Fig was called in to keep time as he had already worked with Ace on some of his solo efforts. The album did have radio success with “I Was Made for Lovin You“. It actually peaked at #11 on the US Billboard charts. But, perhaps the most lasting part of the Dynasty era are the amazing costumed. They were more elaborate than ever with Gene, Paul, Ace and Peter dawning capes with signature colors for each member. The KISS predominantly black and silver schemes were replaced by Red for The Demon, Hot Pink for The Starchild, Blue for SpaceAce and Green for The Catman. The photos and videos from this era are amazing.

KnuckleBonz has expended our license with KISS through 2023 with the band and we are hard at work on a new set of Rock Iconz.

Here’s a collectors list of the things we have created with KISS: KnuckleBonz and KISS

  • KISS Alive II Rock Iconz (Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss) * These were essentially the Love Gun costumes w/ some minor tweaks)
  • KISS Alive 1975 Rock Iconz (Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss) * From the costumes fro that era 1975)
  • KISS Rock Iconz Hotter Than Hell (Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss) * All 4 band members, Gene is sporting the Skull shirt
  • KISS Debut Album 3D Vinyl (The band from that famous black cover and the glowing makeup.
  • KISS Destroyer 3D Vinyl – The most aggressive 3D Vinyl design to date sculpting all 4 characters in the illustrative style of Ken Kelly’s famous cover painting.
  • KISS ON Tour Road Case and Logo Stage Sign – The distressed Road case hold a banner from the Alive photo shoot by Fin Costello and the lighted sign used by the band thru the Alive era.
  • KISS Rock Iconz 2021 – #staytuned

3D Vinyl Bundles with Vinyl LPs – Coming Soon (KISS and Pink Floyd)

If you have been following along this spring you will have noticed KnuckleBonz® has added the ability to buy your favorite Vinyl LPs at https://knucklebonz.com/product-category/vinyl-records/. It’s a select offering to start, focusing on the artists we have created for our Rock Iconz®, 3D Vinyl® and ON Tour Collector Series over the past 18 years.

To celebrate this new category at KnuckleBonz.com ,  will  soon be offering special bundles for bands that have been released in our 3D Vinyl Limited Edition Statue Series. The bundles will include the actual Vinyl LP that was the inspiration for our 3D Vinyl statue design. Up first will be KISS Destroyer and Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here

KISS Destroyer Resurrected was released in 1976, and many KISS fans believe this is the high water mark for the band’s studio recordings. This classic KISS album is revisited and resurrected on 180g virgin vinyl by original producer extraordinaire Bob Ezrin. The album also features the amazing painting by the master Ken Kelly of Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss in the amzing stage costumes from this era. “staytuned here and via our email list for details…check out KISS Destroyer 3D Vinyl Here: KISS Destroyer 3D Vinyl Limited Edition Statue

Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here 3D Vinyl will also be offered as a special bundle with this 1975 release. The 3D Vinyl design pulls from the inner sleeve design by Storm Thorgerson of the robotic hand shake. At this point, Pink Floyd is in the vacuum created by the once in a lifetime release of Dark Side of the Moon and all of the success and fame that followed. Wish You Were Here’s title track as well as Shine on You Crazy Diamond is a tribute to founding member Syd Barrett which by this time is firmly in the grips of mental illness. It also touched on the alienation and disillusionment with the music business experienced by David Gilmour and Rogers Waters via “Have a Cigar” and “Welcome to the Machine.” Check out Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here 3D Vinyl Here: Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here 3d Vinyl Limited Edition Statue

Celebrating KISS Destroyer 45 Years – Paul Stanley “Bob Ezrin was the Key”

Heard a recent interview with KISS Paul Stanley on Sirius/XM Radio and he was talking about the pressure on KISS to follow up on the massive success of KISS “Alive.” Another live record was not on the table. KISS Alive was basically a “best of” record with no new material. KISS Alive featured tracks from the first 3 studio albums, KISS “Debut” , KISS “Dressed to Kill” and KISS “Hotter Than Hell.” None had these had achieved any radio foothold. KISS had built their loyal following strictly thru 1975 on their amazing live performances. Speaking with Sirius/XM, Paul Stanley talked about the need for follow up success in the studio. Without it, it was easy to imagine Alive  being the high water mark for the band. An unsuccessful follow up, could have damaged the bands rep beyond repair. It was at the suggestion of KISS manger Bill Aucoin, that they bring in Bob Ezrin to produce the new album which we now know as KISS “Destroyer.” Aucoin was not simply goin on a hunch. Bob Ezrin can be closely tied to the success of the original Alice Cooper band and albums like “Billion Dollar Banaies and “Schools Out.” Also throw in the Aerosmith’s classic “Get Your Wings”. All done prior to 1976. Ezrin pushed the Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss to new studio heights. 45 years later, we celebrate was is arguably the best studio effort from KISS…drop the needle on this rock classic today…

KnuckleBonz® celebrates the great album art of the last 50 years in a limited edition collector series called 3D Vinyl®. Our favoaite albums are brough to life in stunning 3D statues. All are officially licensed in limited editions of never more than 3000 per design. You can order KISS Destroyer 3D Vinyl here:

KISS Destroyer 45 Year Anniversary – KnuckleBonz 3D Vinyl Series “Toughest Assignment”

The KnuckleBonz® 3D Vinyl® Series has been in production for over 3-years now for those Superfans worldwide that want to celebrate the great album art of the last 50 years in 3D. When we decided to produce KISS Destroyer for the series we knew we had a touch task ahead. We first had to sculpt the KISS band Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehly and Peter Criss in the style of the great fantasy artist Ken Kelly. That was quite a task alone, but add the complexity of  having (4) full statues in a single collectible. This had to be done 1976 times in the limited edition for a price that fans could still reasonably afford.  All of us were really happy with the result back in 2018.

KISS Destroyer is the high water mark for the original line up in the studio and produced some of the bands most iconic songs. “Detroit Rock City” “Flaming Youth” Shout It Out Loud”  and “Beth” are staples for the KISS live shows today.

For sure KnuckleBonz collectibles are not for everyone, and not meant to be. 3D Vinyl, Rock Iconz® and On Tour® collectible are expensive to create and license. We a limited edition is SOLD OUT, only a few thousand Superfans worldwide participate.

Enjoy our KISS 3D Vinyl Limited Edition Statue here on it’s 45th Anniversary –  https://knucklebonz.com/product/kiss-destroyer-3d-vinyl-2/

KISS “Debut” Album Dropped on this Day 1974 – “Album Covers, The #1 Marketing Tool in Music”

Provided you are of the age to remember “Release Tuesdays” and buying music 1st on Vinyl, you will recall how many albums you bought because the cover art was cool or spoke to you somehow. Such was the case of the KISS “Debut” album for sure. The iconic make-up for Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss was really starting to take shape and become what we know today as The Demon, The Starchild, The Starman and Catman today. This early in “KISSstory,” for sure there was almost no radio airplay. So, heavier music needed to be found based on word of mouth, a live show, or via the great print magazines of the day like CREEM, Circus and Hit Parader. However, the favorite method for us here at KnuckleBonz, Inc was a trip to the local record store or head shop. Can still remember the KISS debut record sitting at the front of a bin and the end of the store aisle. The store was dim , but what there was  highlighted Ace’s face in the upper right of the cover…will never forget it.  The KISS Debut album was a no-brainer to bring to our 3D Vinyl® Limited Edition Collector Series. This officially licensed ltd. edition statue is on sale now here at https://knucklebonz.com/product-category/kiss/
