QUEEN A Night at The Odeon – The Before and After Moment

On December 24th, 1975 QUEEN recorded a live show at the legendary Hammersmith Odeon in London. The was not released until 2015 and it’s a must listen and see for any QUEEN fan. The set is of course amazing with the first 2 albums featured heavily, but what is really captivating this show is the “before and after” moment for the band. They had peaked at #12 on the US Charts with Sheer Hear Attack and have just released the A Night at the Opera album. Bohemian Rhapsody is featured in a melody of song snippets with no particular fanfare, giving no hint of how the lives of the band would change over the next year. Once A Night at the Opera and the mania of Bohemian Rhapsody takes hold, QUEEN is not longer that super cool progressive rock band that early fans had to themselves….they become one of the biggest recording/live acts in the world. A bitter sweet before and after moment for the fans that were there at the beginning.

KnuckleBonz is currently working with QUEEN and are coming to the end of our initial Rock Iconz Statues for the band. As you know, all KnuckleBonz work are officially licensed limited edition. Check out Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon  circa 1982 here.

We are beginning to design the new QUEEN Rock Iconz statues for tentative release late in 2022. KnuckleBonz is thinking of going back to this QUEEN A Night at The Odeon era for inspiration. Sound off here and let us know what QUEEN fans would like to see.

RIP Mick Rock – The Photographer Who Fell to Earth

Photographer Mick Rock was rock…as much part of the music scene and industry of the 70s and beyond as any musician or performer.

Mick Rock said that he stumbled into photography and had no real understanding that it could be a career. A lot like many of the performers in the early days of rock and popular music. Mick Rock and his photography are responsible for capturing live and candid moments of many of the greatest performers ever like David Bowie, Queen, Syd Barrett, Joan Jett and Debbie Harry. His QUEEN II cover photo is one of the most iconic in music. Mick Rock died today at 72, but like the music we all dig, he lives on forever in his work….

For us at KnuckleBonz, the visual aspects of music are equally important as the music itself. It the only reason we are company focused on creating for Superfans like you. Great images like the photos of Mick Rock are the rocket fuel that will propel us everyday…RIP MICK ROCK

Happy Birthday Freddie Mercury, Rock Iconz of QUEEN

Happy Birthday Freddie Mercury, Rock Iconz of QUEEN. He would have been 75.

The life of Farrokh Bulsara began on the East African island of Zanzibaron September 5, 1946. 25 years later in London under the name of Freddie Mercury, he was fronting the now legendary rock group named Queen.

The Bulsara family moved to Middlesex in 1964 and from there Freddie joined up with a blues band called Wreckage while studying graphic design courses at Ealing College of Art. While singing for Wreckage, a fellow student introduced Freddie to Roger Taylor and Brian May, founder members of a band called Smile. Smile metamorphosed into Queen when Freddie joined Roger and Brian as the lead vocalist. The final member of the band, which was to stay together for the next 20 years, was bassist John Deacon, who joined the band on 1st of March 1971.

The rest is rock history. EMI Records and Elektra Records signed the band and in 1973 their debut album Queen was released and hailed as one of the most exciting developments ever in rock music.

Very soon Queen’s popularity extended beyond the shores of the UK as they charted and triumphed around Europe, Japan and the USA where in 1979 they topped the charts with Freddie’s song Crazy Little thing Called Love.

Freddie Mercury, who majored in stardom while giving new meaning to the word showmanship, left a legacy of songs, which will never lose their stature as classics to live on forever. Despite twenty years having passed since Freddie lost his life to HIV complications, he remains in the minds of millions throughout the world as one of the greatest artists we will ever see.

Birthday Wishes to Rock Iconz John Deacon of QUEEN

A “We Will Rock You” happy birthday to “Deacy”  from all of us here at KnuckleBonz. John Deacon of QUEEN turns 70.

John’s interest in music was growing at an incredibly early age and he took the decision to learn how to play the guitar. He was soon well practiced enough to form his first band, The Opposition.

Over the next few years, The Opposition went through numerous line-up changes and played many gigs. The Opposition’s bassist left the band, it fell to John to fill the gap. John was now playing the bass.

In October of 1970, John went to see a performance by a new band called Queen. Several months later, in early 1971, John again encountered Queen, when he was introduced to Brian May and Roger Taylor. Queen had just lost their seventh bass player and they asked John if he was interested in auditioning. Days later John found himself at a lecture hall at Imperial College where the band was rehearsing. Not long after, on 1 March 1971, John Richard Deacon became the fourth and final member of Queen.

John’s image as ‘the quiet one” began to evolve on the band’s third album, Sheer Heart Attack. His first song first composition for Queen appeared, with the rather catchy Misfire. John’s writing skills flourished in the recording sessions which followed. He would go on to compose some of Queen’s biggest and most popular hits including You’re My Best Friend, I Want To Break Free’ and Another One Bites the Dust, propelling Queen’s career to new heights.

Today John lives a life retired from Queen but still takes an interest in the continuance of the legacy of the band, and remains in contact with former bandmates, Roger Taylor and Brian May.

QUEEN Roger Meddows Taylor “Soft Hands, Hard Beat”

Paying homage to a great article from Circus Magazine 1975 where they covered QUEEN. We had just seen the band opening on their first US Tour in support of the Shear Heart Attack record and the “Killer Queen” single.  Roger just turned 72 and is looking forward to going back out on tour w/ Adam Lambert outfront of the band in 2022.

Here’s our copy from the back of Rogers’ Rock Iconz® Color Box design…Although best known for his powerhouse role in Queen, Roger Taylor is anything but a drummer confined to his kit. With rock n’ roll in his veins all through his schooldays, he has always been a highly active, vocal member of Queen. He famously wrote Queen’s landmark hits “Radio Ga Ga” and “A Kind Of Magic.”

Roger Taylor was born in Kings Lynn, Norfolk, on July 26th 1949, Roger became fascinated with music in the early 50s, when his family moved to Cornwall. He learned his first instrument, the ukulele, at a tender age, and enjoyed a brief taste of things to come in a pre-teen skiffle band whose collective talent survived just two public performances, both apparently excruciating!

In 1968 Roger formed the group, Smile, with Middlesex guitar ace Brian May. Smile played sporadically over the next few years and even issued a single in the United States. By 1971, Roger had long abandoned any desire to become a dentist or a biologist, and with new additions to the line-up John Deacon and Freddie Mercury, Smile became known as Queen.

1977 was the landmark year in which Queen released We Are The Champions and We Will Rock You. Roger bought a Ferrari, and became the first member of Queen to launch a solo career with the release of the single I Wanna Testify.

His solo album Fun In Space followed in 1981, and was succeeded by 1984’s rock-based Strange Frontier. Both LPs reached the Top 30. In 1987 Roger formed his own band The Cross, in which after more than 20 years he finally resumed the role of lead singer.

Roger also oversees and produces The Queen Extravaganza, the official Queen Tribute act. The Queen Extravaganza is a spectacular touring concert show designed to take the music and live experience of Queen and bring it to generations of fans.

All Rock Iconz® Statues are officially licensed, limited edition collectibles. This is a fine-arts production process where each statue is hand-cast, painted and numbered. Rock Iconz are created in 1/9th scale making them 8 to 9 inches tall. Each statue comes with a certificate of authenticity on the base of the statue.

Pre-Order our KnuckleBonz® QUEEN Rock Iconz for Freddie Merciry, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon here.

Live Aid on this Day 1985 – Did You Tune in?

July 13th 1985 the first ever global simulcast takes place with a live performer live-up like the world has never seen. Literllay ever major performer from that era has a Live Aid story of their performance, or why they were not on the bill. The “Bohemian Rhpasody” film chronicales the QUEEN drama with Freddie Mercury returning for that legendary set. Wimbley Staduim packed in 72,00 fans and was followed by the JFK Stadium Philadelphia USA perfromances with just under 90K in attendance. This is the height of the “MTV Era” so poster boys and girls for that time like Sade, Simple Minds, Howard Jones and Adam Ant had sets at the Wimbley show. The big boys were there of course  Black Sabbath performed with Ozzy Osbourne, U2, The Who and David Bowie all performed. Mick Jagger and Bowie were to perform a muti-continent live duet, but technical issues quashed that and we had to be satisfied with lip synch. Many don’t remember that Live Aid was a true global event with bands like Loudness performing from Japan…loved that guitar tone Akira! Perfromances also came from Germany and Yugoslavoia. Bob Dylan, Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards closed the JFK evening.

Check out our QUEEN Rock Iconz set that captures Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon from a couple years earlier in the bands history. Pre Order QUEEN Rock Iconz Ltd. Edition Statues Here
