The MISFITS – The Rare band we all agree on..

From the advent of the music industry, the bands we listen to and revere  defined us in our formative years. We paired off into groups that gravitated to musical genres. Pop music always had the largest following with fans that may or may not be passionate. As you descend into other genres, fandom becomes more intense and vital to who you were, and are. Punk and Metal would most often square off and choose sides with an occasional cross over. However, there are a few bands that transcend musical genres, and even pop culture. Such is the case with The Misfits. From humble beginnings in Lodi NJ, Jerry Only and all the various lineups have had something for all. From original singer Glen Danzig, thru the more metal releases with Michale Graves, the following of the band has been among the most loyal in music. The formation of The Misfits established the Horror/Core/Punks, but heavy metal too really dug things right off. Cliff Burton of Metallica flew the Misfits flag on-stage with the  Fiend skull tee-shirt on stage at Day at The Green, Oakland 1985. His arm was also tatted with The Fiend. With the flick of the wrist the band can re-unite today and sell out arenas anywhere in the world. They are a rarity…something all camps enjoy and agree on as cool and important.

Yesterday marked the anniversary of the 1st Full length Misfits album release, “Walk Among Us.” Album “American Psycho” and the “Dig Up Here Bones” track is still a fav here at KnuckleBonz. Relive or discover some Misfits today…

Hard to believe it’s been 29 years since Pantera dropped “Vulgar Display of Power” on us. We remember the heavy metal scene struggling with it’s identity at that time, with some of the heavier bands embracing the grunge or “alternative” brands. The Cowboys from Hell where having none of that and were flying the metal and power groove flags high. From the opening riff on “Mouth of War” to the heavy flow of the final track “Hollow”, this record was an instant classic.  A perfect record, that has happened only a few times in hard rock/heavy metal history. The amazing musicianship of Phillip Anslemo, Rex Brown,  Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul Abbott was on full display.  But, the meaning of these songs went further than many metal tracks. It hard to imagine how relevant some lyrical lines would still be today “Be Yourself, By Yourself, Stay Away from Me!” Can the world today be summed up any better?

KISS “Debut” Album Dropped on this Day 1974 – “Album Covers, The #1 Marketing Tool in Music”

Provided you are of the age to remember “Release Tuesdays” and buying music 1st on Vinyl, you will recall how many albums you bought because the cover art was cool or spoke to you somehow. Such was the case of the KISS “Debut” album for sure. The iconic make-up for Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss was really starting to take shape and become what we know today as The Demon, The Starchild, The Starman and Catman today. This early in “KISSstory,” for sure there was almost no radio airplay. So, heavier music needed to be found based on word of mouth, a live show, or via the great print magazines of the day like CREEM, Circus and Hit Parader. However, the favorite method for us here at KnuckleBonz, Inc was a trip to the local record store or head shop. Can still remember the KISS debut record sitting at the front of a bin and the end of the store aisle. The store was dim , but what there was  highlighted Ace’s face in the upper right of the cover…will never forget it.  The KISS Debut album was a no-brainer to bring to our 3D Vinyl® Limited Edition Collector Series. When we began the initial discussions for our 3D Vinyl® Limited Edition State Series in 2017, the initial focus what to create something in statue and collectible form for Superfans™ that for what ever reason, did not dig the statue category. There was a ton of creative motivation obviously, but that was the touchstone moment.

Once we decided to move forward with a new KnuckleBonz collectible series, the real fun began; what albums should we initially create in 3D? We all blurted out our obvious favorites. Some were perfect for the 3D Vinyl format and could be expressed easily in statue form. Others, although amazing albums, with equally great cover art would prove elusive. One album that we all defaulted to and wanted to consider, was Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.” The gold standard for concept albums, and the 8th studio release for Pink Floyd. The power of artist Storm Thorgerson’s pyramid with the prism light beam? Sounds great right? We are now 4 years into the 3D Vinyl Collector Series and we still have not pulled the trigger on any Dark Side of the Moon designs for 3D Vinyl. However, we are sneaking up on it and might submit something to Pink Floyd for consideration soon…Staytuned.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – “What’s in a Name?”

For years, like many music Superfans that saw their bands get snubbed by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, we would get pissed when the new inductees list would come out. We railed against the opaque nomination process controlled by a select few, expressing personal opinions rather that a true indication of a performers impact on the music industry and fandom as a whole.

This year was no different, a few bands/performers that have waited way too long have been tapped. Music’s ladies have often been left outside.  So happy to see Tina Turner, The Go Go’s, Kate Busch and Dionne Warwick were included in the 2021 Class…and Carole King, are you f$ckin’ kidding me? It took this long for Carole King? Rage Against the Machine and Iron Maiden too have been tapped…duh.

That said, if we take a step back and look at what the RRHoF actually is, it  makes the whole thing less vexing.  Peel back the covers and all you really inside the glass pyramid in Cleveland is a money making enterprise. No better or worse than  Six Flags Amusement parks or the local shopping mall…and yes, even KnuckleBonz. We are a business as well. The only thing that is  considered when setting up these entertainment businesses  is how they are going to get people to show up and lay down their hard discretional spending on what’s inside. Once you look thru that lens, what and who is in the RRHoF matters way less, or not at all.

What’s in a name? The reason reason this is such a flash point for music fans is the name that was chosen for this business enterprise, “Hall of Fame.” It suggests something it is not, and can never be. Only music Superfans can decide on a hall of fame, and we do it everyday with the music we listen to, the merch we buy, and so on. Emerson, Lake and Palmer and other obvious snubs are no less cool or important today that they were last week and will remain so. Thank goodness…

Def Leppard’s Classic Album – The “Hysteria” During Recording

The album art of Def Leppard’d classic “Hysteria”  gives only a hint at what the band and recording production team went through ahead of the 1987 release.

This was the 4th studio recording for the band Def Leppard featuring Joe Elliott, Phil Collen, Rick Allen, Steve Clark, Rick Savage.  All wanted to step up the overall production value. Mutt Lange of AC/DC recording fame, was up in place as work began, but he quickly departed with a severe case of rock-n-roll burn out. In steps, song writer Jim Steinman from the Meatloaf “Bat Out of Hell” camp, but this yielded nothing the band liked so there was another departure. These were ahead of the devastating news of Rick Allen’s car accident that would eventually take his left arm.  Rick’s dedication to return to the band is well documented as he used the time to master his new drum kit with a midi-trigger. Mutt Lange would expectantly return to only have to stop session again because of his own accident. He recovered quickly only to see lead singer Joe Elliot be taken out of action with the Mumps.  To add to the calamity during this period for the band was the decline of guitar master Steve Clarke’s health. This would be the last record he would play on.

Hysteria released in August of 1987 and would go on to sell over 20 million records world-wide.  Each track is amazing, No less this (7) singles dropped for this rock music masterpiece.

Side 2 – “Gods of War, Don’t Shoot Shotgun, Run Riot, Hysteria, Excitable, Love and Affection”

Perhaps a great subject for our 3D Vinyl® series at some point as we lock down our production plans for 2021 and 2022 this week here at the KnuckleBonz® Studios. The design would spawn our own Hysteria.

“Far Beyond Production” – Pantera’s New Far Beyond Driven 3D Vinyl® Collectible Statue

Here’s a quick shot from the KnuckleBonz factory production floor of Pantera “Far Beyond Driven” 3D Vinyl® Limited Edition Collectible Statue. Picture here shows the shading step to get the dark colors into the sculpted textures on the skull and base. That is done by hand, using special paint and a skilled artist with a rag to wipe away the proper amount of color. Not high-tech, but gets the effect we want. This production has gone along fairly smoothly. No real Covid-19 impact on this production team; we can’t say that across productions this year. Twisted Sister’s production was interrupted for a 2nd time last week pushing the ship dates for that project back.
